World Mental Health Day 2021: Inspirational celebs who have spoken out…

Stars have opened up about their struggles with depression, anxiety, and mental health.

From royalty to musicians, the list shows that already the high and famous are not immune to mental health issues.

This year for World Mental Health Day, the World Health Organisation will showcase the efforts made in different countries to encourage better mental health care, bringing to light positive and uplifting stories.

The organisation will also provide new materials, in easy to read formats to help educate people on how to take care of their mental health.

In the spirit of World Mental Health Day commencing today (Sunday, October 10), we take a look back at all of the inspirational celebrities who have spoken out about their struggles.

Meghan Markle

Meghan married into the Royal family in 2018 and faced a mental health crisis shortly after. She said in a bombshell Oprah interview: “I just didn’t want to be alive anymore — and that was a very clear and real and frightening continued thought.”

Lady Gaga

World-famous singer Lady Gaga opened up about her mental health issues while accepting an award.

She said: “I began to notice that I would stare off into space and blackout for seconds or minutes.”

Gaga continued: “I would see flashes of things I was tormented by, experiences that were filed away in my brain with ‘I’ll deal with you later’ for many years because my brain was protecting me, as science teaches us. These were also symptoms of disassociation and PTSD.”

Prince Harry

Prince Harry has been a substantial campaigner for mental health.

Commenting on his own mental health battle he said: “I can safely say that losing my mum at the age of 12 and consequently shutting down all of my emotions for the last 20 years has had a quite serious effect on not only my personal life but also my work in addition… I have probably been very close to a complete breakdown on numerous occasions.”

James Blake

Singer James Blake told Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1: “I’ve tried to talk about mental health, and my own mental health mostly in my records for a while, for at the minimum the last three records. Maybe all of them.

“I think the first record feels like a very fragmented attempt at discussing, and a very tentative attempt at discussing stuff, because I think I was just too afraid to put it in plain English, to be honest.”

Selena Gomez

Actor, singer and businesswoman Selena Gomez is very open about her mental health.

“I’ve discovered that anxiety, panic attacks and depression can be side effects of lupus, which can present their own challenges. I want to be proactive and focus on maintaining my health and happiness,” she said.

Lando Norris

Lando Norris has admitted to being “depressed a lot of the time” and worrying about his Formula One future during his first. season in the sport.

Adele

Adele also opened up about her mental health difficulties after the birth of her son. She said: “I had really bad postpartum depression after I had my son, and it frightened me,” she said. “I didn’t talk to anyone about it. I was very reluctant…Four of my friends felt the same way I did, and everyone was too embarrassed to talk about it.”

Ryan Reynolds

Ryan Reynolds said that his time filming Deadpool left him with high expectations of himself.

“I never, ever slept. Or I was sleeping at a perfect right angle — just sitting straight, regularly working at the same time.”

Dwayne Johnson

Notorious tough guy Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson has also been candid about his mental health.

He said: “I found that, with depression, one of the most important things you could realize is that you’re not alone. I wish I had someone at that time who could just pull me aside and [say], ‘Hey, it’s gonna be OK. It’ll be OK’.”

Kendall Jenner

Hotly tipped to be the world’s highest-paid form, Kendall has been open about her mental health issues saying: “I have such weakening anxiety because of everything going on that I literally wake up in the middle of the night with complete-on panic attacks.”
